Half-life: Half-life (n.) In technology, the regular period in which the production cost of a technology or product will fall by 50%.

The half-life rule underpins Moore's famous Law, which states that the density of transistors on a chip will double every 18 months. Thus, one can say that the "half-life of silicon is 18 months". While individual technologies will have more or less precise half-lives, finished products include service, tax, or cartel components that will eventually come to dominate the final cost.
